It all happened while I was coming up with the events of a particular place.
I thought an auction of relics would be likely in such place, so I added a few flavour lines for decoration in your base. Then it occurred to me that I could make auctions somewhat more interesting instead of just giving the final price. As I was testing the auctions, what with its different bidders and stuff, I also added some trinkets to make the menus easier to read at a glance, later applying the improvements to the rest of menus in the game.
That's how an event expanded considerably the game, but then another one came up to claim more changes. As I added a different kind of place decoration that would actually make for a decent defence, I recalled how I have environmental attacks in all terrains except the player's base. A few tweaks later, there were acquirable defences for the base, examples of which include patches of brambles and sinkholes surrounding the area.
It is likely that continuing event development will trigger more stuff like this in the near future.
